Yesterday on the way back from a really great dinner, I saw some guys pointing and waving and apparently yelling at the car I was in. I thought they were being jerks. We were stopped at a light, and they still kept yelling and pointing at our car. I ended up giving them a very tentative finger, because I was a little freaked out. Matt rolled down the car window, and they yelled, "Nono, your scarf is caught in the door, lady!"

And so it was...

I apologized my head off for giving them the finger and thanked them for saving my scarf. the light changed, and we sped off after I'd rescued my scarf. I said to Matt, "I think I've learned an important lesson about the kindness of strangers. Matt said, "Yes, yes you did."...I was (and am) embarrased.

Thing is, I usually take the bus home, which is a very differnt climate. My bus stop on the island is quiet and happy enough, but the one outside work is in a roughish part of town. People get mugged, sometimes by gunpoint. I get harrassed sometimes. So I've learned over time to command my own space and not take any crap from strangers going, "Hey baby, hey baby, you so fine, baby!" Between that and dealing with the general public day in and day out, I tend to be suspicious generally...and apparently, more suspicious than I should be, from time to time:/

I'm not gonna laugh because that's happened to me before. When all you're used to are taunts and cat-calls, it's hard to know when someone is sincere.

Isn't that how Isadora Duncan died? ...by having her scarf wrap around the wheel of her roadster? or is that an "urbane" myth?
