This week we're going back to renegotiations at the Jade Mines for our union contract. I've been reviewing my notes and trying not to second-guess things more than I have to, but I know it's going to be much more tense than last time. We're going through this bizarre, tense freak-out at work and management is sure to try to use it somehow. Urrrgh. I wish we could all just sit down and talk to each other like sane adults, actually listen to each other and consider what's possible and what's not without this intricate, disingenuous game. Our Union president at our first meeting with management said something to that effect, actually. (He made it sound much nicer, though.)

So, one day at a time with the workies. I've been invited to go rollerskating on Wednesday after work. I'm tempted, and I probably will, but I know to be very careful. Captain Emily broke her arm last week at the roller rink, so I'm a little nervous about it now. Poor Captain Emily. I check in on her from time to time on the phone, and we all went to go see her this weekend with food and love...

And I'm looking forward to a trip in August. I'm going to New York for a few days, for the vacation I didn't take this winter. It's very exciting stuff. I'll run around the Village and go to Central Park and generally be a Midwestern hick looking around and yelling, "Hooooo-weee, now that's different! Where can I get a lemon bar?" I've only been to New York once, and I enjoyed it very much, so I'm sure I'll have a really good time...

So there you are...

For some reason, I've got the movie "Heathers" stuck in my brain at the moment. I used to watch it so often as a teenager I've got whole chunks of dialogue stuck in there. Today it's this chunk:

Veronica: "We're sick of being experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabbits--we just want to be treated like human beings!!"

Veronica's dad: "I don't patronize bunny rabbits!!"

Veronica's mom: "Treated like a human being? Is that what you said, little miss Voice of a Generation? How do you think human beings treat other human beings? Do you think it's all a game of doubles tennis? When teenagers complain they're not being treated like human beings, it's usually because they *are* being treated like human beings!"

Veronica: "Guess I picked the wrong time to be a human being..."

Veronica's mom: "You'll live... ...Want some pate'?"

I know it's probably not as accurate as I'd like but it's such a funny, apropos scene today...
