In this day in history...
Dec. 5th, 2001 08:45 am...2 billion years ago a bacterial reef concentrated and metabolized enough uranium-235 to accidentally create the world's first atomic pile. The natural reactor burned itself to death, went nuclear and fossilized itself for future discovery off the West African Coast....
(Unlike most of my "In this day in History"s, this one is actually true...isn't science fun?)
Good morning!!!

Date: 2001-12-05 07:44 am (UTC)(It's where I read about the nuclear thing)
The really cool/potentially scary thing is that we've got sunken nuclear subs
with plutonium aboard...and there's a small chance the same reefs will eventually try to *metabolize* it someday if we don't clean up the wrecks...(This would be probably centuries, but still!)
