We have 9 horses, 8 of which are here, one is at a trainer's...

and what's it like? well, that depends a lot on who you ask... I'm not horse crazy like my mom and my daughter so I don't find them worth it, but they do... *shrug* From my perspective, they are nice to have around when *I* want them... other than that, I'd prefer someone else take care of them... I would have horses if I were rich where I could hire someone to deal with them... otherwise, I wouldn't have 'em...

Michelle, the orbital mind control laser *is* yours. Remember?

Date: 2001-12-11 01:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] paradoxicalsoul.livejournal.com
Well, in some ways they are like children... they take away your spontenaity... you wanna go to a party? You gotta make sure the horses are fed first before you go... you wanna sleep over at a friend's house? You gotta get home early in the morning or arrange to have someone feed in the morning for you...

Right now it's winter and we have 8 horses here... my mom spends about 2 hours twice a day feeding, cleaning stalls, and watering the horses... now, it obviously doesn't take that long when you have fewer horses, so don't get the impression that it's always THAT much work, but still, to feed, clean a stall and water, for each horse it takes about 15 to 20 minutes and you need to do it twice a day.

Did you know that horses can't throw up?

I had no idea...(What happens if they eat something bad for them?)

It kind of sounds like taking care of a really big dog..lots of maintenance, like having a kid.

Date: 2001-12-11 02:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] paradoxicalsoul.livejournal.com
it is sorta like taking care of a kid or a dog... *nods*

and if they eat something that's bad for them, it either has to pass on through or they will die... :/ they aren't very evolved animals, evelutionarily speaking... they have some way cool things about them though... such as you can totally dope up a horse by pinching it's upper lip... I wish that was all I had to do to get high!! lol

~Virginia, Thanking you in advance.

hehe... don't know about the nail polish but it's true about the flat palm... here's a couple more interesting little tidbits... horses are monocular... meaning they only see through one eye at a time... and they can't see in front of them well at all, nothing up close well... for them to be able to see something well, it needs to be about 4 to 5 feet away... so when you see the horses jumping, the horse can't see the jump at the time they need to jump at all... also, they see in shades of green... sorta like black in white only in shades of green... so fresh grass is WAY greener than dead grass, etc...

I didn't know about the green...wow, that's really cool! Imagine a world of nothing but greens... And it gives me new respect for horse trainers that they can train one to jump where they can't really see.

I know a lot of the racing horses are supposed to be pretty inbred and mean...what's the horse population like these days?

Date: 2001-12-11 02:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] paradoxicalsoul.livejournal.com
depends on the breed, I suspect... I don't know much specificly about the thoroughbreds (race horses)... we have Morgan horses... Morgans are the first and only truly American breed of horses... only a bit over 100 years old... Morgans are bred to be a good all around general horse, able to do some of the same things as "work" horses and yet have the refinement of a "lady's" or "gentleman's" horse...

You can go Here to see the pictures I took at The Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show in Oklahoma City in October... :)
