The sky was grey and sultry out the gritty windows as I walked back from lunch...grey like the lunchmeat in my cheapo sandwich. Grey as my mood; me, Ms Maus, a starving artist in a cold, uncaring Midwestern town....

There'll be a murder coming up in the next couple of pages, you wait and see. Ms Maus will be on familiar terms with the man who does the autopsy. It'll seem like he was nobody in particular: a random killing. But Maus will have that uncomfortable feeling...

You know you don't want this case, but you know that your mind will keep working at it until you go down to the cheap side of town and find out who's behind this thing. That matchbook from a place called The Blackbird; the $50 that no one took from his coat pocket; the reluctance of the police to tell you anything: it all adds up to you out in the atmospheric locations for the next few chapters before you confront the corrupt DA.
