My stepdad was attacked by some bastard neighbor's Rottweiler yesterday and is in the hospital...he's running a fever, and that goddamn animal nearly took his arm off.
The guy who owns the animal apparently is lying his ass off to the cops...and the cops aren't even going to test the animal that attacked my dad for rabies or West Nile...and he's running a fever, which he never does.

Mom's really scared....
I'm really scared....

It doesn't help that we're two states away from each other right now.

What?! Oh my god!!
((((Michelle))))
Those cops have to DO something!
Can the doctors tell if he's infected, with some test?

Just so you're less scared about the rabies and West Nile thing... there's no way either of those things would be causing the fever, since it would take at least a few days for them to infect anything. If the dog out-and-out ran up and attacked him, he's probably not rabid (rabid animals are nice, even the wild ones, until they flip out and attack - that's why if you ever find a wild animal that doesn't run away from you, DO NOT go near it). West Nile, too, is the product of some uber-media-hype - something like only 30% of infected people get symptoms, and only a handful of those people get the *serious* version of the illness, and it's the symptoms that end up doing damage, not the virus itself. He's probably running a fever for other reasons - he's more likely to get a bacterial infection than anything, and those are easy to detect and easier to treat than just about anything else.

Hopefully the dog owner will be charged with something and that dog is *put down*. People like that give every *decent* owner and every decent dog a bad name.

I hope your stepdad recovers soon, with few complications.

I don't know; it might be too early for a test to tell...
but if it's possible, mom will MAKE them do it; she's terrorized doctors for years, and isn't about to stop now. (It's one of her best qualities.)

The hard thing is I have to go to work...but I'm leaving mom my work number and I'll try to get off early and check on her. I just found out about all this this morning in my e-mail--I tried calling last night and the machine was off....

Thank you so much....

I'll e-mail my mom and let her know that....thank you so much.....

I hope they land on this neighbor with both feet...but it's the Ozarks, so it's not a guarantee, and that goddamn dog is still over there....with it's goddamn owner...

My thoughts are with you and your family...
Poeple who don't control their animals are the worst!
Have no fear!
The fever sounds normal for someone who has had siliva
from an animal in his blood stream.
He will be ok, I just know it.

I hope they can deal with the dog, if it does it once it'll do it again.

Hope your stepdad is okay, I'm sure he will be.

I hope so too...but they haven't gotten the dog yet, and the Ozarks are notorious for half-assed police enforcement. You're right about the dog, too...I just hope the bastard goes right for the owner next if the cops don't do something...

I'm usually not so violent-minded...but it's my only dad...

Holy shit! That dog and its owner should be shot.. M'luv wanted to get a Rottweiler once, but I said 'no f@cking way.' Is your stepdad in a decent hospital? A fever could be related to allergic reaction or bacterial infection.. Kitchen witch is right about West Nile Virus... If he's over 6 and under 76, chances are WNV won't be debilitating...

Seems like there's aways something fate drops on your doorstep just when you get some good things happening...

Oh no!

They wont have the dog tested? They won't do it, because that means killing the dog to examine its brain. But if the owner can't prove its had the shots, and there's no way to test your stepdad for it (which I don't know about), it will have to be done.

I odn't pray very often, cutiepie, but in this case, I'll make an exception.

Here's hoping your Dad's okay and healthy and relatively unscarred after all this. Here's hoping there's also a fair amount of money in it, too. Far be it for me to be litigious, but... you know.

Hugs to you, too.

Love,
A.

Argh! Best of luck getting the dog and owner located and tested.

One of the doctors I work with got attacked while riding his bicycle last year and had to get rabies shots as the guy TOOK OFF with his dog and left Chuck standing there, and they couldn't locate him. However, the good news is that even if your dad does need rabies shots, they are not NEARLY as bad as they used to be!! Really!!!
