msfledermaus...The Maus in the yellow hat was led forward by the gaggle of giggling sock creatures that were responsible for her impromptu abduction. Past the ruined marquees of the abandoned carnival grounds..past ancient pictures of rides and clowns, freaks and foods and fantasies on canvas, flapping in the blowing wind. Sand and dust swirled around the doors of the old funhouse entrance, and Ms Mausi was pushed by eager woollen hands into the darkness inside.
As the doors shut, she realized that it wasn't completely dark at all, but lit with haphazard piles of Christmas lights and clutches of paper stars. There were art supplies everywhere, and books, and blueprints drawn with smudgy hands. Old clothes hung on racks, petticoats and tuxedo jackets and spangled tights. More sock-creatures were inside, some wearing oversized hats apparently left over from the days when the carnival thrived. In the middle of the room...
Well, in the middle of the room was...Schultz?
He had a Napoleon hat cocked to one side, and he beamed an even wider monkey-grin as he jumped up from his stately beanbag chair and grabbed Ms mausi's hands and danced around.
"Schultz, what the HELL is going on here?!?!?! What is this place, and what am I doing here? You got some s'plainin' to do, mister!!!"
Schultz didn't answer, but led her to a corner of the room where a huge picture book lay open to a vast illustration covering both pages.
Ms Mausi took a look inside...it was a painting of Peter Pan flying Wendy and Little John and Michael to Never-Neverland.
"I don't get it..." Muttered the Maus. Schultz started to point to the Wendy figure and then poked her in the gut with a giggle.
"Oooh, no, you don't mean...Nonono you DON"T, I have to go home!!! I have a job! Things to do!! People will notice I'm gone, you know!!! I am NOT being Wendy for your weird little Lost Boys experiment!!! No no NO!!"
Schultz just grinned.
You notice some minor flaws in this little plan of yours? Wendy WANTED to go to Never-never!!! Volunteered!!! And she had her brothers with her!!! She--uh oh, what are you----ohhhhhSHIT, no YOU DON'T!!!"
For the minute she mentioned it, some of the monkeys jumped up and down in excited fervor...and flew skyward....
Ms Maus glared at Schultz, who only shrugged and grinned even wider.
