...For a long time I felt that Spike wasn't doing well...he'd get yellow in spots, and was tilting slooooowly like the Titanic. I was never sure if I was watering him enough, too much or not enough. I felt like a bad bad cactus-mother. So this weekend, fighting back a couple of tears, I decided to put him out of his misery and put him out with the trash. I felt so guilty.
I hate killing things if I don't have to unless they're big mean stinging insects in my living room...

You'd think that would be the end, huh? A brief eulogy to Spike the cactus?

Nope.

Redneckwitchboi was taking out HIS trash an hour or so later and recognized Spike. He rescued him from the trash, brought him to his apartment, and gave him a bath and a little water. the next time I talked to him on the phone he asked, "Did you throw out Spike?" "Yes I did...he looked so sick."(whimper) "No, no, he's just about to bloom!!! Come up and get him!"

Which I did.

The diagnosis on Spike is he just needs some more sunlight and I wasn't killing him with water. He's just funny-looking. There's a moral in here somewhere.
To say thank you I brought Ben two tiny cuttings from my dwarf jade bonsai. (Apparently jades will grow just fine from trimmings, so the last time I gave Pretty the bonsai a trim I planted some of the branches. Sure enough!) I felt doubly guilty for giving up on Spike so easily.

And Ben has earned the medal: Rescuer of Cacti. The moment I can make one:)

honest-to-goodness, your posts are the best.

I didn't have anything else really good or witty to say (for goodness sakes, it's still in the 5a hour here), but I did want to say THAT.

Aw, shucks...

I had to tell the adventures of Spike the cactus, it was just too good not to tell, you know?:)

You're a mighty fine posty-type lady yerself. I really love seeing you pop up with something interesting.

wow, my baldie lost all his spikes and has been yellow for a long time (like 2 months). How long does this bloom thing take?

I have no idea...
but if there's at least some green, he's okay. And look for little round browny-red spots on the very top, those are the gonna-be-blooms, I'm told.

Yay!

Major Kudo's to Ben for coming to the rescue.

Now you know.. always have someone else check your plant friends for life signs before giving up. You aren't nearly as bad a Cacti mom as you thought!
