Wow...Human cloning by Raelians...just when I thought life couldn't get any weirder.

I'm reallllly interested to hear what people think on this one. Do you think the Raelians actually did it? Do you think it's a good idea if they did? Do you think it gives a disreputable gloss over the medical potential of the science of cloning? Do you think it's an irresponsible experiment with cloning still fraught with medical dangers? do you think it will lead to possibly abusive situations for the new cloned humans? Do you think this is paving the way for the first Clone War? Do you think their PR person's hairstylist and makeup people should be tied to a tree somewhere in deepest Oregon, or at least given back to Tammy Faye Baker?? Do Ya?

C'mon, thoughts. Gimme gimme gimme!

Here's a link to CNN. Click on the lady with the overprocessed hair!

I don't think it really happened. I'm waiting for the DNA testing. :)

I don't get the point of cloning. Why create twins of people? It's wierd and has a certain fascination, but I can't see how it helps anyone.

On the other hand, I can't see why people think it's abhorrent and want it banned.

Assuming for a moment that the report is true, the woman who gave birth is now the mother of her own sister...

CLONED!

As weird as it is, IT IS VERY interesting!! I was GLUED to the tube this morning as that woman talked and talked and talked and talked. It went on for 30 minutes before she took questions. My co-worker and I were not impressed. For a person of science she skipped over a few questions. I THINK there is a GOOD chance that it's a scam to get people to pony up $500,000. I mean if you are going to make an announcement as big as this....let's see some evidence. She provided none. We'll see what the results are in about 8 days.

For now we're trying to come up with some good names to go along with CLONAID. Here they are:

SEND IN THE CLONES
CLONING AROUND
CLONES "R" US

Any ideas? Well....time to go to my volcano and talk to my alien friends. SEE YA!! =O)

i don't think it's true either and waiting for the dna in a week. i think the whole human cloning thing is weird, not sure why someone would want to clone themselves?

You know...

I bet they're bluffing too. You can get pretty close to a person's dna with a stem cell without it actually being a clone.
Assuming they even did that much science.

I think a lot of it is people can't let go of the idea of having "Two of you" around--never mind it's a whole new personality that just happens to share the DNA.

I think it's interesting but, human nature being the way it is, would lead itself to horrible abuses in time. Designer kids, the Ubermensch, 18 thousand David Hasselhoffs...you name it.

I read her transcript, and she seemed a bit awkward with the scientific questions she as a "chemist" should have been okay with. And since I only read the transcripts, I have a question--is English her first language? Her phrasing in general is very awkward too, but I put that down to the possibility of her not being a native English speaker.

Me neither...

This babe on CNN mentioned that her 24 year old daughter was apparently one of the incubating clone-mothers-to-be...that right there creeped me right the hell out.:(

Again I say it sounds like pure egotism to me. We have more than enough people in the world as it is, why are we creating more people with less genetic variety?
Ugh Very short sighted, hopefully it is a hoax.

I feel sorry for the kid.

Me too...

Makes me wonder about Michael Jackson's latest kid--I mean, the mother's not around, he's named after his brother...what if he IS a clone of his brother or something equally weird?

*shudder shudder*

Sorry I was so abrupt on the phone a while back. I had a *really* bad day at work.

I do too. Aliens would make us shape up as a planet really really fast--either to look good for the neighbors, or to band together to fight the planetary lasers and whatnot.

Damn, I want aliens. Ever since I could remember I've wanted aliens.

Well, only if you want them genetically identical to someone else, so not much designing or improving is possible.

> 18 thousand David Hasselhoffs
Great idea!

Maybe too many people have read that novel about cloning Hitler - the title escapes me...

I haven't read that one either, but I've heard of it.

i did read David Brin's short story "Thor meets Captain America" (Okay, this is off-topic, and nothing to do with cloning, but i recommend it highly.)
