I was offered a small bit of illustration work at the Inferno yesterday, making a cartoony illustration of the saying "Like crabs in a bucket." (Apparently the idea is that if one crab tries to leave the bucket the others pull it back down--a metaphor for habitual thinking in this case, or usually used to say something about the companions you keep.)

I thought it was an interesting saying, so I'm sketching crabs when no one's lookin'.

It's funny how this saying translates into the Midwestern mind....people here from the East Coast or the South knew exactly what it meant because they'd grown up hearing it.
We Midwesterners all went, "Huh? They do that?" Most of our thoughts went right to crab legs in buckets with drawn butter at Red Lobster; the only way we Minnesotans usually get near shellfish...

I'm feeling much improved...did I fight off a virus, or was it making my ex-boss order the mop bucket in the mop closet cleaned out? We had a cat-urine stench this week emanating from that closet, right about the time I started not feeling well. (I really think that might have been what did it--maybe some kind of mold or goo or mutated spinach or something.) Ewwwwwwww....
