My Halloween party was a great thing--everybody was happily fed and entertained. We watched 'Razorblade Smile", one of the most entertaining bad-vampire movies in the world. I took people on a little field-trip around the island. At one point Liz'z fella Nick and I were field-stripping my poor Ashford spinning wheel again, to find out how to fix her. I ended up giving a small spinning demo to various friends with Vasilisa, the foster spinning wheel, and everybody oohed and aaahed. Captain Emily stopped by later on, and I finally stumbled off to bed about 2-ish...

I'm finally caught up on my sleep, and on day 4 of my four-day weekend. One of the highlights of today is that with an email from Liz, a run to the hardware store, some help from Matt, hammers, wire cutters, a new washer and some muttering...Hester Hestia has now arisen from the grave. She works again! She's alive!!! ALIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!! It turns out that there was a pin that was supposed to go through the main drive rod. It wasn't there...in fact, I suspect it hadn't been there for about a decade or so. When the neighbors gave me Hester in the first place, the wheel's middle hub had come apart, and I glued it back together with Gorilla glue and a couple of clamps. Luckily, I didn't go too crazy with the glue, since the hub-holes were still in place. One of the rods from my Ashford Lazy-Kate was the right diameter, so we went to Home Despot and bought a rod, cut it down, took the wheel out, reassembled everything, lined up the holes and hammered the new hub-rod in...it sounds so easy, but there was a fair bit of fiddling involved...

But it worked. And I'm so much happier now that I have my Hester back:)

The really cool part is that she ran so long without a hitch, missing the part that attaches the wheel to the drive rod...she shouldn't have worked in the first place!! But she did, for 3 years... amazing.
