Wire scaffolding, wax, pomade, and lots and lots of fake hair padding everything out...and you kept it in for days. They were impossible to wash, so there were diamond-handled head-scratchers for vermin to go with your ensemble...yikes!

Maybe not Marie so much; she scandalized the French court by taking daily baths...but a lot of the court was damn whiffy.
