It's a funny thing...I've got all this stuff I would like to write about at some point, but I keep getting bogged down with things...by the time I'm at a computer again, I'm tired enough to put down some quick anecdote and them I'm off again, doing some needful thing.

Maybe tonight I'll give myself time to goof properly...

Here's a quick thing, though--a while back some critique-site (I forget which) was calling Livejournal the trailer-park of the internet. I was amused, since I think that's a more accurate picture of Myspace. Facebook is more the suburbs--nicely packaged, a bit bland, not particularly deep. Livejournal is more the funky artisty quarter of a big city--sometimes the rents get funny, and there are some seriously weird pockets, but there's always something colorful and interesting going on...

So, what are your thoughts? If Livejournal could be compared to a neighborhood, what would you compare it to?...

I think we're an old neighborhood part gentrified.

I don't think you can compare it to a neighborhood. It's too big and too varied. It's more like a whole city. I think your part of LJ is probably like you describe. :-) But there are trashy, trailer parky areas, and artsy areas, and bland suburbs, and eclectic and busy downtowns.

...That's the thing that bothered me about the critique in the first place...it was pretty oversimplified. When I get some time I'll track down the article if you want to see it...

Agreed - it's a reflection of the many people and communities that form it. If someone said it's like a trailer park, that probably reflects their friends on LJ - not LJ itself.

What an interesting thing to think about. I believe I agree with Kevin. When I only think of my part I forget all those other types of people among the 2 million accounts.
