I'm in the break room with a bunch of cow-irkers. April is across from me, wearing a tinfoil hat so the aliens can't read her thoughts. It's that kind of day...

Then we started discussing the movie, "Signs" and I pointed out that even though the plot was fine, the science totally shot my suspension of disbelief. What alien in their right mind would come to a mostly-water planet, with tons of water-vapor in the air, and abduct humans that are mostly water if they were allergic? Maybe they were going to put them in a dehydrator bought off the internet? I dunno...but when I originally saw the movie, it was scary, scary, scary, until the water scene, which made me laugh out loud in disbelief...

Now April tells me I've ruined the movie for her. I've been apologizing for the last ten minutes, but I'm not as sincere as I could be. It's not my fault! I didn't make up the stupid science!! And where's MY tinfoil hat, anyway?

"And tell Merrill to swing away..."

I have this knack of predicting the 'answer' in his movies. Soon as I heard the indrawn breath I thought..."The alien's got one of the kids..."

When Mary and I saw "The Sixth Sense" I said "I get it, Mary. The kid sees dead people. Bruce Willis' character is dead." Three people behind us got up and walked out.

I can do that too, a little...it helps if it's really really formulaic:)

I never really understood why tinfoil hats were perceived to be effective, when they conduct electricity and all. It's like a crinkly lightning rod... ;)

I think it's because, by some power of associative transmutation, the tinfoil hats are akin to lead hats, blocking radiation from reaching the brain. (Of course, there's no reason why the radiation couldn't come up through the jaw...)

I know...the tinfoil only protects what it actually covers, methinks...and it works because of special additives invented by the Tinfoil-Making-Company (tm) to protect your food and you from alien abduction...

Oh yeah, and it's also really good for bleaching hair:)

Did you really ruin the movie for her, or did she just allow herself to believe you did? (I'm not familiar with the movie.)

I blasted her suspension of disbelief when I told her that the stupid water-ending was stupid. But it's stupid! I can't not-stupid that ending, I can't!!!

Waitaminute. Are you saying she saw it already, and she thought it was great, and you pointed out a flaw, and ruined it for her?

Shame, shame, shame... you shouldn't apologize for that! That's her own problem. If she can't enjoy what she enjoyed before (and still wants to), despite new information, that's something only she can deal with.

Maybe it would help if she would take the tinfoil hat off her head...I still see her in it, and think it may be doing something subtle to her thoughtmeats:)
