Gaily-Waily was coming over to my house after work to take some lilies of the valley that were growing out of control over in my front yard. Before we left, I looked out the window at the dumpster next to MCAD, the private art-school next door. "Hmmmm," I mused aloud. "Yesterday was graduation day, which means that students are throwing out their art supplies. I once found a whole set of paints in an MCAD dumpster, never been used..." Gail was dubious--she had never been dumpster-diving before. But I wasn't surprised when we got there that she was the one that risked life and limb to get the really good bits. Our haul had the following:

One nice big canvas with a really awful painting on it. (Gail's)
Two desk drawers that convert nicely to shadowboxes. (Mine!)
Lots of blank paper. (Gail's)
Good pieces of masonite, suitable for painting or repainting. (We split them up.I got most of them.)
Leftover plastic flowerpots, suitable for taking lilies home in! (Woot!)
One hardcover book of hymns.(Gails--she wants to turn that into another shadowbox.)
One stepstool.(Gail's)
One wire running man-shaped sculpture. (We fought over who had to take it. I lost.)

Slim picking this year, I must say. But we had a good time, and celebrated with dinner at my place. (We went to Lund's and spared no expense. We earned it.) Then we took pictures of yarn for my Etsy account, hung outside with Ben and Peaty's Mama Bunny, and I helped Gail dig out the lilies she wanted to take home with her...

And now tonight after work I can paint the new drawers and figure out where best on the walls to nail them up:)

Very cool. I should check the alleys by the University to see if there's anything good there...I could use some shelves. Even the kind made up of cinder blocks and planks would do.

You are so clever! How does an old hardcover book of hymns become a shadow box? I'm trying to picture it.

open a few pages of the book and cut out a rectangle in the rest of the pages. leaving a frame around the edge.
