*Yawns*
I'm a little sleepy around the edges from a great night out. Matt and Erin and I went to the rooftop of Seven for their pretty outdoor fire and some sushi. Then we trooped over to Barfly to see Venus deMars and Voltaire. I have to say, if it weren't for these two, I would have to have been dragged kicking and screaming into Barfly--it used to be a skeevy stripper's club, and now it's reincarnated as a skeevy bar. The Carpe Noctem event was on the fourth floor, which seemed to be poorly-lit, cheap storage space. Erin's observation was pretty accurate--"The whole ambiance reeks of church basement." Too true, too true...
I kept seeing scenesters I didn't care for that much, and missing the ones I really had hoped to run into. I kept muttering to myself, "Dammit, I should have forced Ben the Neighbor to come with me." He decided it wasn't a good idea--the show was being run in part by someone that had stolen a bunch of his cookbooks and sold them online. What is it with organizers ripping people off? I had to refuse people asking me to donate for a charity while I was there because I hear the money never makes it to the charity in question--the organizer keeps it all:/
Venus and Voltaire were great--they both can hold an audience well with nothing but a guitar and their talent. But even they were struggling. The mix was fairly muddy, the lighting was almost nonexistent. I still had fun, and so did my friends, but it was mostly in spite of the venue, not because of it. Meh...
At least I have "Vampire Club" stuck in my head for a while...and that's not bad...
