WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!

How can this country DO something like this?!?!?!?!?!

Yes yes, I know what kind of climate we're in...but we are NOT Nazi-era Germany. This was exactly the kind of trick the Nazis pulled back in the day.

I'm nauseated and ashamed at my country.

I'll do a more detailed post in a while...I did answer your question in Darkknight's comments too...basically the deal is the INS in California's arrested over 500 Middle-Eastern men on very flimsy charges under the Home Security act.

From: [identity profile] darkknight9.livejournal.com
i'm in with phil99, what are you talking about?

Something that happened today?

Re:

Date: 2002-12-19 05:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] msfledermaus.livejournal.com
Yeah...here's the deal:

The Homeland Security act has been making Middle-Eastern male immigrants between certain ages-16 to mid thirties-register so it's easier to keep track of them and potential terrorists in the bargain.

Today I learned that over 500 of these men have been arrested. People with clean records, herded together like sheep, hosed down with cold water in some cases. They have not been charged with anything formally, but the excuse has been "expired visas". Anyone who's had to deal with the INS in this country knows that it's common for a visa to expire while you're going through the paperwork for a new one or a green card, and as far as anyone can tell most of the people involved have been rigorously following the rules and have proper documentation.

I couldn't find links on CNN, but I'm told the bbc's got one...I got my info from the LA times.

Well the link to the story on the LA Times web page is: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-register19dec19004434,0,30991.story?coll=la%2Dheadlines%2Dcalifornia

However, if you are not registered, you cant view it. :(

Drat.

However* foxnews has one here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,73518,00.html

maus: Did the times give any sources for their info?

Forgive my inquiry, but it sounds alot like too many assumptions could be gleaned from your summary of the info from the LA times. Not that I am saying anything from the liberal media is absolute truth or anything....

A long list of attorneys for their clients, the family members of the men who have been arrested, some brief statements from the INS, and witness testimonials from other people who had been registered.

I'm baffled that CNN doesn't have a link; my work was alarmed enough by the news that we had a special open forum to the public last night since this has also happened locally to members of the Somali community here in Minneapolis.

As for my assumptions or conclusions, I tend to cross-reference my news media strongly since Bush's acendancy to the presidency.
I'm careful not to jump to conclusions. But at best this is alarming, and it is a breach of civil rights--not to mention bad press for the US's attempts to mollify the Arab world. At worst; it's the start of something we *don't want to start in this country. We've even done it before with the Japanese interment camps in Menzanar and other places in California. It can happen again with this administration:(

I am as well....generally this is the kind of thing that they would be on top of....

my work was alarmed enough by the news that we had a special open forum to the public last night

Where do you work?

As for my assumptions or conclusions

Oh no no no.....thats not what I meant. I meant your summary left just enough unanswered questions to get me to go looking for answers, but I could see where some people (that may or may not be family members of mine that may or may not have been over at my house last night:) ) could draw hasty conclusions. I actually try to keep up on your postings about politics and life in general because I respect the fact that you are open minded and objective. Well, at least you are on lj. Not having met you, you could be a complete wierdo! :).

In all seriousness, it sounds like there is more than meets the eye on this one. I am very guarded about anything from the mouths of lawyers, almost as much as politicians or the federalies. Peoples basic civil rights may be violated, peoples rights as citizens may be violated. I just am not real sure on this one, ya know?

Although, if anyone with outstanding warrants etc. were hauled in due to this measure, it reminds me of all of the "you've won a free vacation!" or the Simpsons "you've won a free boat!" where the cops nab people behind the storefront.

Newsworthiness and whatnot...

I work at a modern art museum. (Nothing glamoruous, I run their mailroom. We do a lot of community outreach stuff, and most of us paint or do something on the side--nonprofs are notoriously badly paid.)

I'm very flattered by your opinions about my opinions. Heh. I don't say anything on my LJ that I wouldn't say in real life. It's gratifying that someone's thingking about what I've said in relation to their own opinions:)

the whole thing does remind me of the Simpsons's episode too...basically they were obeying a law they were ordered to and got arrested for it.

I just feel we're in for bad times in general...

And I should add you to my friend's list:)

Ins Arrests

Date: 2002-12-19 05:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wizzy.livejournal.com
Well...I have mixed feelings here. To boil it down: IF these people are here illegally, they NEED to be dealt with. BUT...on the other side of the line: IF these people were ivited down to register OR risk being arrested at a later time, that's a bit decieving, and THAT is NOT what our country is all about. Then again...

Isn't "deception" GW's middle name? Sooo...I'm not really too sure where all the facts and issues are with the INS story but explanations are at least warranted. TAKE a DEEP breath and keep saying.... only 684 days until election 2004. (More and more alarm clocks should start ringing in peoples heads- we can only hope).

Re: Ins Arrests

From: [identity profile] msfledermaus.livejournal.com
It's just too much. Most of the people they arrested had clean records, student visas, or were waiting for their green cards. A lot of them were under 18. A large constituency of them were Iranian Jews who came here to escape persecution and were going through the process of new visas. And we blew whatever nicey nice propaganda we were trying to feed the Middle East.

We're in bad, bad bad times...

I'm reading more about it now. What bothers me most is the fact that my wife is from south Africa and although she is now a permanent resident but it took her a year to get it after she moved here in 2001. To think they could have had her locked up makes my stomach sick. Funny....a woman having an affair with a president can open up impeachment hearings but a man who wants war at any cost without any clear evidence skates off without so much as a slap on the wrist. Now this.

Funny, as I write this I think about all the past presidents I have criticized in class and in writings but somehow I feel like we are close to being arrested for speaking out. We are clearly headed for the Twilight Zone if we aren't already there.

I worry about that too...

i mean, the bloggers helped track down all the gaffes Trent Lott managed to say over the years and strung them together...You can bet someone else is watching us all now, too.

But at the moment, I say let them...they can't get all of us. Not yet, anyway....
