Okay, who here watching the State of the Union address last night wanted to:
A: Take a drink whenever Dubya said "Nukuler" or
B: Wanted to smack Dubya silly every time "Nukuler" was uttered?
(I fall into camp B,BTW.)

And anybody notice he didn't seem to really be interested in what he was saying until he got to Iraq at the end? I found the body language juuust a little creepy. (Granted, this really isn't a new thing; Our Esteemed leader's facial expressions and body movements have always disturbed me.)

It's funny...I was killing time waiting for the address by watching a little tv, which is something I almost never do anymore. So far I've avoided most of the reality shows on purpose. Yes, even the "Survivor" ones, though I've seen bits and pieces. It just seems so....stupid. Pointless. Downright annoying. And nobody on the shows seem to attract any real sympathy from anyone. "Joe Millionare" seems populated by escapees from Melrose Place. It makes me wonder what would happen if they picked a different female demographic for their contestants? Saaaaay, the lovely ladies of LJ? Twenty bucks says we'd be onto this guy's lying butt within an hour and a half and as a group dump him bodily in the moat of that castle, hole up in the wine cellar with laptops and sell the pics of us pantsing the guy to the highest bidder....

Now I'd watch THAT! Wouldn't you?

(Disclaimer: The Osbournes. Must-see-tv. 'Nuff said.)

Not for me. I can see drink- and drug-addled Brummies in the street for free.

Well, that's why we're so obsessed with them here, we don't have any er...Brummies? What's a Brummie?and the ones we do have are insanely rich to boot.

Brummies are people from Birmingham, a large and gruesome conurbation. I think Ozzy may be from Wolverhampton, but the accent's about the same. Listen to his strange vowels.

I watched some of the speech and as always, I try to give anyone the benefit of doubt...BUT, like you, I was watching this guys eyes and body language and it literally made my skin crawl. I HAD to switch stations. To put it bluntly Bush SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME!! =O(

We watched the X-Files movie on VHS instead... I knew they would sound bite it to death in the AM...

On CBS this morning they interviewed people at Key's Cafe in St. Paul... The rxn was mixed (which was good...) but the interviewees weren't very articulate (but they COUL say "nuclear")

Neither. I've been around too many people with southern/Texas accents to be bothered.

And anybody notice he didn't seem to really be interested in what he was saying until he got to Iraq at the end? I found the body language juuust a little creepy. (Granted, this really isn't a new thing; Our Esteemed leader's facial expressions and body movements have always disturbed me.)

No, I noticed that he was very interested in his portion of an Aids support package to Africa, and that whenever any president makes a state of the union address, they must stop every two *sentences* or so to smile at appluase. The stopping, smiling and constant ringing applause has always bothered me, ever since Carter. I wouldnt hesitate to say that no president has ever seemed interested under these circumstances.

I was able to see most of it last night, and while I may not agree with everything he had to say, I do support him. Even if he does look a little goofy. :)

*Nods*

I'm sorry to say that I don't support him. I've got a lot of reasons, which I won't go into, since you seem like a nice person and I don't want to get into the "Good!" "Evil!" "GOOD!" "EEEVIL" arguement that so many people are doing right now:)

And yeah, the applause was very distracting.
No sir, I didn't like it:)

okay...
*shrugs a little*

One of my main probs with the Shrub is he'll offer some small sum of money for various programs that look good, but when you look at the figures you realize it's a fraction of what they need and what they used to get--re AIDS funding. (And he didn't even pay the amount promised until very recently, after over a year of waiting.) He's gunning specifically for programs I think we need. His tax cuts are both transparently rich-oriented and a disasterous idea ecomomically. He's in the pocket of the pro-life-movement and the very religious right. His hand-picked appointees to various posts have been people whose greatest interests are to raze the posts they've been appointed to or to gut them until they have no more meaning or power. His attitude about Iraq makes me very nervous and I think his agenda towards it is heavily personally biased. He's slashed arts funding everywhere, and I work for a non-prof art museum that does a lot of community outreach. He's done almost nothing to curb the rampant corporate crime in this country, even when his own VP's been implicated.
He's alienated most of our allies, and even the ones who have stood firm are nervous about him.

And, Goddess help me, the man does look like a chimp...:)

Okay, your turn...

I just got through your comments...whoa.

I wasn't really expecting a reply that was quite so long. I have to say it made me more than a bit nervous. I can debate and reason well enough but lost my taste for arguement over the years with someone who *had* to be right, all the time, about everything no matter how small. Many of the points you mention are decent ones, and there are many I don't agree with at all...I feel like I'm wimping out here. I don't mean to.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't want to have to dissect why I don't care for Bush point by point,. word for word, quoting Time and Newsweek and the Post and his State of the Union Address and the plethora of documentation for both our viewpoints.
It's not something I enjoy at all. Plus my time online is a bit limited.

Forgive me, I don't mean to seem the wuss about this, or denigrate your views or all the work you put into to your replies. Your thoughts are very interesting. I just wanted to apologize for not expounding on the topic at length...

PART ONE

Ahh...the glories of Notepad!

One of my main probs with the Shrub is he'll offer some small sum of money for various programs that look good, but when you look at the figures you realize it's a fraction of what they need and what they used to get--re AIDS funding. (And he didn't even pay the amount promised until very recently, after over a year of waiting.)

My main problem with every president since Taft has been the recluse behavior on the part of the White House to promise big money in a program, but to set it up like they were "playing with a salary cap". Usually it swings like this: I promise x dollars to this program for y years. Where y is greater than or equal to 5. This ensures that if allowed to have an additional (or now just second) term, the $$$ can be delivered on. If not, or if the plan calls for more than eight years of funding, the politician can always claim that the new guy in his old chair doesnt want to help said program. Its a game thats been played by every side for longer than I've been alive, and luckily for you and me, the next reality show will be a string of all of these types of promises on pay per view.

But, if a plan calls for money to appear, you can bet that the majority of actuals that are released to the needy will be right before and during an election year. :)

He's gunning specifically for programs I think we need.

Like? :)

His tax cuts are both transparently rich-oriented and a disasterous idea ecomomically.

I have heard enough soundbytes from both sides of this issue to gag. Until I am done reading the proposed cuts in theyre entirety, I don't want to passs judgment to quickly. However, his tax cuts (so far)have saved my family some dollars, and we don't make more than 40k per year together. I think I am rich in luck and love, but not money. :)

Why do *you think its a bad idea economically?

He's in the pocket of the pro-life-movement and the very religious right.

Not to big of a deal for me. Every president has had to play to some religious faction in order to get elected. However, there are enough vigilant people to help me secure my personal freedoms, that I don't worry about Roe v Wade being overturned. I do have issues with using private/religious/charitable orgs acting as arms of the government though. But, again, not a likely event.

His hand-picked appointees to various posts have been people whose greatest interests are to raze the posts they've been appointed to or to gut them until they have no more meaning or power.

Umm...I'm not quite sure what you mean. Could you explain further?

His attitude about Iraq makes me very nervous and I think his agenda towards it is heavily personally biased.

No argument here. I am not very nervous, but all other issues aside: if my old man got into a scrap with somebody, and that same somebody even looked at me funny ten years later. I'd kill him.

But thats just me. :)

He's slashed arts funding everywhere, and I work for a non-prof art museum that does a lot of community outreach.

Well, this is where we will butt heads I think. I have never fostered a liking for most things that have demanded need of public funding. If it looks like a business, talks like a business.......Arts falls into one of those categories for me that says if you cant sustain yourself, close. I do believe in the arts. I also believe that there should be at least one outlet for the arts in every city, per capita basis that is completely supported by the state and federal govts. We must preserve and grow with culture and exposures to expressions. However, I dont think we need to saturate metro areas with federal dollars to keep everyone who wants to be heard afloat. I think that govt funding could be spent in better ways.

I have a bias here, and it stems from my last job. I worked for a domestic abuse shelter and legal help group for the abused and there families. I have seen the distribution of funds to all areas being cut and I have not been either impressed or happy about it. When I learn of porkfat spending like a study to determine if women who watch pornos can determine there sexual preferences, I get upset. When I see $$$ go to performance artists and/or another struggling gallery I have a really hard time justifying not having that money to save lives and help people whose partners think its ok to use them as a punching bag.

Again, don't get me wrong, I love going to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and back in the day, I used to love acting, I in no way want you to think that I devalue you or the work you do. But this has always been a personal struggle for me.

He's done almost nothing to curb the rampant corporate crime in this country, even when his own VP's been implicated.

Hard to do anything when the people involved resign. And those that are left are too worried about shoe bombers and serin gas. Every time this is mentioned I think alot of people forget two things. 1) That this is a matter for the department of justice to get involved in, and as such there isnt alot the executive branch can directly do to affect things. I'm sure they can help jumpstart an investigation, but what else could the White House do? 2) Money. Our justice system runs on money. I'm sure that the head guy of the enron thingy is mad that he had to give his law team half of his stolen money, but he is probably not to concerned as he sits on a warm beach somewhere. Bartender? I'll have another dry martini.

Shaken, not stirred.

As far as Cheney is concerned, its politics. Now that the inbetween year voting is over, there are no democratic senators or reps standing up and calling for his head. Its a smear. Not that any republicans are immune, all parties use this tactic. If something were of huge consequence, don't you think that Cheney would have to have appeared before the various committees involved by now?

PART THREE

Date: 2003-01-30 10:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] darkknight9.livejournal.com
He's alienated most of our allies, and even the ones who have stood firm are nervous about him.

I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that you mean France and Germany. If not, please expand on this topic. If so:

France has a very good reason for not wanting anything other than the UN inspectors to continue, and find a clean bill of health for Iraq's (former?) nuclear program. They were the primary country who supplied Iraq with materials, reactor components etc. If Iraq used a nuke on an invading force, that would be "bad" for Francef in the World Politic. Silly French, you think they would have learned there lessons from godzilla. That aside, if the UN inspectors say there are no nuclear components or programs here, and later something is used/discovered, the French govt can point to the UN and cry foul. Its kinda like a get out of jail free card.

Germany is politics. Its majority party is focused on *not getting involved in the events of the world, but instead fixing its problems at home. A bold plan, and one that got Chancellor Schroeder elected. The people would not support him if he chose to support the decision of force and rightfully so. Not to long ago the German people as a whole were suffering from terrorist attacks on a frequent basis. Nobody wants that to happen to them *again.

As for the rest, did you see/read/hear about the op/ed page paid for by the majority of the rest of Europe?

Whew! Thats alot to retype. As far as the monkey thing, I would just once like to see a picture of him with a bannana! That would be good humor.
