I've got mixed feelings about today.
St Patrick's day in America was first started by Irish immigrants who were sick of being treated like animals and wanted to celebrate who they were, and that they were. It's also the holiday of the saint who converted Ireland, the "snakes" being the Old Faith. *frowns a bit* It's today that we find out whether or not we're really, truly, honestly going to war in Iraq....so this year we have more excuse than the usual to drink ourselves sick. Please, drink responsibly through the gas mask....And put on some Pogues while you're at it, willya?
But it's also the name day of St Urho, who is reputed to have driven the lutefisk out of Finland. (Yes, yes, it's supposed to be grasshoppers; it's really lutefisk, ask any Fin. They'll tell you straight.)
Happy St Patrick's day....and mind the leprechauns, they're known for biting.

Date: 2003-03-17 06:57 am (UTC)I'm with you on being conflicted. My daughter and I protested this weekend. She had a great sign that said "mr. president, please use your words and not your weapons!!" and on mine i drew a picture of a bumpersticker for bush/chaney in '04 with a red slashed circle around it and it said "I am committed to a regime change!"
on a small other note, will you add me back please? pretty please? with sugar 'n' stuff? My leprechaun says he'll be nice to you if you do... ;)
