Famous knitters through time....
May. 2nd, 2003 09:59 amCharlemagne. Knitted his own kingly jumper. No one dared to laugh.
Caligula. I won't tell you what he knitted with...eew.
Nero. Picked it up from his Uncle Caligula, he was actually knitting a new toga while Rome burned. He was annoyed when his favorite knitting shop burned too.
Ghengis Khan. His therapist mentioned it was good for between-battle stress. His men were constantly on the lookout for cashmere goats while they pillaged.
Vlad the Impaler. (those needles just kept getting bigger and bigger and, well...obsession is never a pretty thing.)
King Kamehameha the Second of Hawaii...He picked it up after wiping out a knee surfing. Most complicated leis in the Islands.
Eleanor of Aquitaine. She was the envy of the courts of Europe, with her flashy lace-knit chainmail tunics.
Modern Knitters to watch out for:
Gromit
Hindrance and Perfida, the Siamese twins
Dame Darcy, of course!
Julie Roberts...*shrugs*
Kyle McLaughlin, though he'll admit it to no one.
Alice Cooper, ditto
And, well, heh, me....

Date: 2003-05-02 08:22 am (UTC)I always admired the people I knew who did chainmail...I keep meaning to buy a nice chain bracelet someday to remind me of my SCA days.
Re:
Date: 2003-05-02 08:28 am (UTC)My grandmother taught me to knit using yarn, but I wasn't very good. I kept making odd shaped lumpy things instead of what I was trying for :)
I never joined SCA though I enjoy going to ren fairs.
Re:
Date: 2003-05-02 08:34 am (UTC)I'm always interested in stuff like that.
Ahh, the classic Lumpy Bookmark. (tm) Many, many lumpy bookmarks have I made as a neophyte knitter. (Which I still am--heck I only learned about 3 weeks ago or so.) Hmmm..you could always knit a long lumpy strip and say it's a "Textured" scarf:) Works for me, anyway. *chuckle*
I still go to Ren Fairs, but I was in the SCA for years..I dropped out when I moved back home from Montana, and..it just didn't click anymore. sometimes that happens.
Maaan, I love me some Ren Faires, even though you may as well stick a cacuum cleaner down your pants and have it suck out all the money:)
Re:
Date: 2003-05-02 08:41 am (UTC)I went to one SCA gathering in college but just didn't click with the people there, so I know what ya mean.
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one the Ren Faires have that effect on! I went to a small but nice one near Cleveland last year, and was happy to get out with having spent less then $100! Though I have since then wished I spent an extra $20 to get a second gargoyle to match the one I bought that works great as a bookend :)
Re:
Date: 2003-05-02 08:48 am (UTC)yeah, after a while the social aspect of the SCA kinda wears you down....your friends move away and the only ones left are the annoying ones, or the ones that you hang out with outside SCA style stuff, so skipping out isn't that big a deal. Plus being female, it was nice to ditch all the psuedo-courtly slobbery guys in hose. (Granted that's part of the appeal of Ren Fests...go fig.)
yep yep, me too....I went 4 times to our local Ren Fest and walked out about 350 bucks lighter total...it was the clothes that bit me. Yipes.
I should buy gargoyles instead. I only have one, and he's a squishy guy from Target.:)

Date: 2003-05-02 08:56 am (UTC)I can see how the SCA experience would be different for a female then a guy. Lots of "wench this" and "wench that". Though I have to admit I never noticed the slobery guys at the Ren Faires. but then that could be because I was looking at the women in the low cut and form-fitting outfits :)
Gargoyles are fun. I need to get a picture of the cats with the one I picked up. They walk up and sniff it, looking at it :) The only gargoyle-like thing I have is the plush C'thulu in the icon.
Plush Cthuhlu!!!
Date: 2003-05-02 09:14 am (UTC)I can see how that would be pretty cool.. I don't think I've actually seen a chainmail ring, though I've seen the usual bracelets-necklace-chainmail-bra kind of thing.
yeaaaah, the SCA experience is er....interesting...if you're female. It can be kind of fun if you're in that kind of mood, but it gets annoying pretty quick too. the bodices are so much fun, I hafta admit. I go clubbing in mine whenever possible.
That sounds hilarious, the cats checking out the gargoyle. But are they afraid of Plush Cthuhlu? *memo to myself: buy the goddamn Plush Cthuhlu; you know ya wanna*
Re: Plush Cthuhlu!!!
Date: 2003-05-02 09:22 am (UTC)They aren't afraid of the plush C'thulhu. Actually, they like stuffed animals. One of them stole a small stuffed bear my dad had so I had to get them their own stuffed animals. I never see them carrying them around, but I keep finding them in odd places around the house :)
And get the goddamn Plush C'thulhu already! Everyone needs a cute little Great Old One in their home :)
Re: Plush Cthuhlu!!!
Date: 2003-05-02 09:31 am (UTC)Cats and stuffies are cool...a friend of mine had a kitten that kept stealing the Tony Millionaire Sock Money I bought for them. bad Kitten!!! It was hilarious, since the monkey was twice the size of the Tiny Kitten. I wish I had pictures...
You know, I keep buying friends Plush Cthuhlu's, but never bought one for myself? What the hell's wrong with me?!?!? *grin*
Re: Plush Cthuhlu!!!
Date: 2003-05-02 09:39 am (UTC)When Jay first saw my dad's bear, she was about the same size as it but she still dragged it around and groomed it :) Now that she's older, I think she pretends she's too mature for stuffed animals so she doesn't do anything to her bear while I'm around :)
Isn't that always the case? You help spread little evil dolls for everyone but never have enough for yourself :)
Re: Plush Cthuhlu!!!
Date: 2003-05-02 09:51 am (UTC)I love cats...they're so funny!! that's so cute. Especially that "I'm too elegant for THAT" attitude they have...Its wholly adorable.
Yeah, I spread evil all over, hither and yon, to friends and relatives, but nope, no evil dollies for me..*mock sobbing* and do I get any from anyone oohhh, no, *snicker*
I just have to go shopping one of these days...
i should go make lunch and run off to do errands...but i'd love to add you to my friends list if'n you don't mind:)
Re: Plush Cthuhlu!!!
Date: 2003-05-02 10:01 am (UTC)Hehe... you go to all the effort to spread little evil icons all over but no one does the same for you? Come on! Where's the hate, and desire to spread pain and suffering? Where? Heh.
The funny thing about my cats is that they are slow to respond to me when they know they are doing something wrong but if they see me reach forone of the squirt guns I have stragically placed throughout the house then they go tearing off to hide with no pretense of grace or superiority :)
Have fun with lunch and your errands!
