Storms...

I was knitting and watching a Harry Potter movie early last night when the weather sirens went off. (the weather had been on-and-off rough all day.) I switched on my radio, sure enough, Hennepin County was on a Tornado Warning. So down to the basement I go with some other neighbors, and I spent the time gently soothing disgruntled neighbor kitties in cariers.

I get a call from Ben, who went off to the video store even though I warned him it was raining. (I TOLD you!!! No one LISTENS to MEEEE!) They had missed the sirens and my "Don't go outside, the Joy Luck Club isn't worth it!' phone call, and were at Blockbuster at the time. *chuckles a little* At least those little square buildings look pretty sturdy.

AT 2 am I was woken up by a familiar and very unwelcome sound...the goddamn FIRE alarm. Were we struck by lightning? I groggily went through the drill--clothes, keys wallet *pause* umbrella, out to the stairs...what the hell; the stairs are soaked. there is a brand new waterfall gushing down the stairwell, and lucky me--I grabbed the really slippery sandals in my rush. So I gingerly climbed all the way down the stairs barefoot, carrying my umbrella and sandals instead of trying the other stairwell. At least I got to see some pretty impressive watery havok.

The firemen show up, and inform us that the water and thunderstorm set off the fire alarm. (which is always a problem with a really good storm--it screws up all the electrical security systems and alarms) It was safe to go back, but the caretaker wasn't asnwering the big burly firemen pounding on his door to get him to turn the noise off. (It was eventually turned off by the manager, who got here through the heavily-bucketing storm to save our ears and our frayed nerves.)

I was pretty annoyed by the whole episode until I turned on the radio this morning--tornadoes have wiped out a couple of smallish towns, and there's damage and power out all over the metro. Everyone has a flooded basement. I can hadly wait to see what happened at work. I may have to canoe home for my 4 day weekend...aren't you glad I live 8 floors up?

*yawns*
I sure could use a nap, though.

Eeeek! You certainly lead an interesting life, ms Maus.

You didn't see any damage to your posessions, did you?

Nope, dry as dry can be...but I'm not going down that stairwell for a while.

and I know for a fact the Minimalsit inferno will be flooded again, which means it will be hot AND humid...you never get a break in the Inferno:/

A couple of years ago there was a tornado in Milwaukee. One of the higher profile stories was that the Blockbuster got hit. There were videos all over the neighborhood. The manager heard the front doors fly open, but when he went to shut them, he saw an Explorer sliding across the parking lot on its roof. So he ran for the back room and just as he got there, the front windows (the whole front of the store) blew out. So video stores may not be the best place to be.

At least you have an interesting life :)

Of course, I remember similar "interesting" nights in the college dorms. They did not amuse me.

An 8 story waterfall sounds kinda neat though :)

It was neat...would have been neater if I didn't have to pick my way down barefoot and panicky:)

I just wish life was more interesting on a er....more positive fashion?
