A bundle of worries, and all for me...

Things have gotten a little worrysome in my neck of the woods lately.
Work is very frustrating (still, yes this is nothing new.) I kinda got stood up last night. And Mrs Scraggit isn't doing so hot right now. (She has heart trouble.)
I talked to her a bit last night on the phone, and she told me that she and Mr. Scraggit found a tombstone in their yard from the 1800's, for a young lady who died on my birthday. They think there's a family crypt somewhere on the property. (The Hazmat folks have been giving them and the neighbors new soil, since there's some kind of lead contamination..so when they were digging they found the gravestone.)
Mr. Scraggit's making sure they don't drive the bulldozers over the area where they think the grave is, and they're thinking of contacting the local University for a bit more history.
Anyway, the Scraggit is under strict orders--anitbiotics, bed rest, and more bed rest. she broke that rule a bit calling me to tell me about the tomb. (But it's a TOMB, I mean, you have to call and tell people like me about Victorian graves in the front yard!) I'm very glad I'm flying out in a couple of weeks. Jokes aside, I'm worried. Can't help it, I'm a Capricorn, we worry about the rotation of the Earth, it's how it works.
So think the occasional kind thought, willya? I promise I'll keep the fretting down to a bare minimun.

Date: 2003-12-30 08:03 am (UTC)Don't fret about fretting, it's perfectly normal, at least to me it is.
When I was very young, maybe seven, I remember some construction guys digging in my friend's alley and finding a tombstone from the 1800's. The really weird thing was its location was the heart of the northwest side of Chicago. I will have to ask my parents if they remember any more of the details. I do remember the newspaper interviewing my friend's parents (and being a little peeved they didn't mention my name at all. Even at seven I got no respect. :)) I also remember my friend and I using a small brush to try to get the dirt out of the engraving so we could read the name and dates.

Date: 2003-12-30 09:15 am (UTC)Or it could just be the work of vandals, and the actual gravesite could be elsewhere.
Here's hoping that Mrs. Scraggit gets well soon.

Date: 2003-12-31 06:38 pm (UTC)and they're looking to see if they can find the grave, since the Hazmat people have to dig up the earth anyway, and I'm sure there's rules if human remains are involved. No matter what, it's pretty cool. It's a bit spooky the young lady whose stone it is died on my birthday...which is in a week. Serendipity is a freaky thing.

Date: 2004-01-01 08:07 am (UTC)My wife knows a lot about the cemetaries a round here, with her large Italian and Irish families, she has visited quite a few of them. My family never went to the cemetary so I didn't know much about them but I am really starting to appreciate the beauty and history that are contained within the wroth iron gates. There are a lot of cool cemetaries a round here and a number of tours. Have you heard about the one (don't know the name off hand) that is the final resting place of the members of a circus troop whose train crashed? They have many statues of elephants, lions and circus stuff. It is located near the Brookfield zoo. I have heard it is real erie to walk through and hear a lion's roar from the zoo. Spooky. For the record, my Mom is alive and coming over for diner today. :) My wife's Mom is the one hanging out with the mobsters. :) When you get ready to visit e-mail me, I can try to find some info for you.

Date: 2003-12-30 10:06 am (UTC)The thought of a tomb in the yard is so cool. I hope there is information available to learn more about it and whether the tomb is really there or the stone just ended up there for some reason.
In town here a few months back someone discovered a gravestone in the corner of their yard. It turned out vandals stole it from a cemetary and dumped in in that yard some time ago. It was somewhat hidden in a seldom traversed area so no telling how long ago it had been deposited there. I did merit a short spot on the local news though until it was discovered not to be a burial site but just a stolen grave marker.
Maybe you could take pictures of the one Mrs. Scraggit found.

Date: 2003-12-31 06:36 pm (UTC)And I guess it was beruied under some earth, so it may well be
an actual plot. (I guess there's a pretty good cemetary that's civil-war-era not too far away. Cool stuff, lemme tell ya.)

Date: 2003-12-30 12:02 pm (UTC)There once was a fly on the wall
I wonder why didn't it fall
Because its feet stuck
Or was it just luck
Or does gravity miss things so small?
I stole this one. *red face*
