I'm enjoying my quiet Sunday afternoon...

I got abducted by my friend Lakesha last night, and ate sushi and cake and ran around buying books and beat-up on-sale videotapes. (I found a marked-down copy of Roald Dahl's "The Witches." I'm a lucky creature, oh yes I am.)

Today? Feeling verrrrry lazzzzzy...I got invited to an Imbolc party tonight with Ben and Petey. I love them so, but I don't really feel like a party today. Even though they have curry. And a few x-mas presents from other friends I haven't gotten yet. And tea. Dammit, I may have to go, huh? Why did they have to have this thing on a Sunday, anyway? I have nerve-wracking stuff to do tomorrow; I'm not in a party mood...

Some of that involves still waiting for the MIA's decision...they hadn't decided yet on Friday. I'm looking around for other job postings in case they decide no for some reason. And tomorrow I should put in my "I have jury duty, you'd better have someone ready to cover for me" e-mail to the scheduler. At least now I've gotten a kind of Zen about the job hunting and the jury duty...for the one, I'm doing what I can, and for the other, well, you can't fight City Hall...and any reason to make the Inferno pay for me sitting and knitting is a Good Thing:)

so there you are, so far as I know...

Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank gawd. Not while your sitting on a trial though, but those endless hours of sitting in the jury selection room.....anything to keep your sanity.

Actually, sitting around waiting to be selected for a trial just might be the quiet time you need. Just sitting around doing what you want. Except you can't escape. Aaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeiiiiiii! You'll be trapped! I hope you get a little short trial to hear.

maybe not during whatever actual trial they send me to,but I'm told there's a lot of sitting around and waiting...I have some sock yarn I can play with, so I'm ready:)

how long do you expect to be off work for this jury duty?

maybe with a little luck they won't need me at all...I'll put myself on the call-in list, so i can find out if they need me every day without having to go down to the courthouse right away:)

I honestly don't know...the info says I'll be on call for two weeks at least or for whatever the court people tell me, whichever's shorter. It may go longer than that.

If I'm still at the Inferno, this means they *have* to give me 2 weeks off with pay. Bwaahahahahaa!

yeah, that was my next question, how are you supposed to support yourself while serving jury duty. what happens if the trial goes longer than that 2 weeks? does the gov't pick up the tab? and your job is required to hold you job right?

Here's the sitch as I understand it...

You go for however long they need you for--usually about a week, though they say two. You get paid $20 a day for travel and lunch and whatever. You can get out of jury duty by pleading financial hardship, but it's tough. Work usually has to hang on to your job, has to give you the time off, and most places with benefits pay for your time off. (the Inferno has to; the new job if I get it would not right away.) when I leave the Inferno, there's a pension plan I can pull and cash in (with a penalty) if I need the money for emergencies.

Most of the people I've talked to about it said their cases were under a week, and they were interesting and whatnot. It's downtown's courthouse, so i can't imagine it would be a long trial--we don't have the death penalty in Minnesota, and anything really heavy would probably go to a different court than Hennepin. (er, I think. I've never had to consider it before:)
I can get onto a call-in list where I check in over the phone twice a day to see if they need me without having to show up to find out.

all in all, the timing's kind of annoying but it's not the end of the world...and it might be interesting and educational. Or I can just start screaming, "Guilty! GUILTY!!!GUILTY FUGGIN GUILTY, DAMMIT!" and get sent home:D

oh man, i double dog dare you to just start screaming guilty during pre-trial.

I knew you would...I knew you would dare me...
heh. It would be really funny. i'd have to smuggle in a video camera:D

...mind you, we had a crazy-lady shooting at the courthouse not that long ago, so I may get arrested for any courthouse wackiness:)
