*Prose alert!!! Prose alert!!!*

In the lakes full of weeds, sweet and tall,
full of iris,
cradling lilies, small white goblets
riding on murkey depths,
in the lakes all aroud me
are the swimming lake-people,
freshwater mermaids
diving in the deep, cold secret reeds
swirling away the mud
dark and never seen by human eyes,
save the flick of a tiger-muskie tail
that's impressively large.
They scorn hooks
and writhing minnows
but will catch a spinning lure with their clawed hands,
yank them from their lines,
and wear them as shiny trophies.

Sometimes their hands bleed
if they miss.
And then they cry,
holding out their scaled, pearly hands
to let the freshwater wash their tears and cuts away...

Sometimes they sing
in sweet, high voices
the songs of longing and loss.
They miss their sweet sea-cousins
with their pearled eyes and sandy bellies.
They hide their scaly, tiger-stripey faces
from unkind eyes
and let their voices catch and tug on human hearts
like a hook on a line.
People leave them coins and flowers
and don't know why.

I hear them singing sometimes, in my dreams.

I leave them poems.
