I posted the story of the accosting on Anarchy, asking people to tell me what happened with them if/when they had something similar happen, and how they dealt with it. The responses are widely varied--advice on weapons, advice on where to go and what to do in case of attack,And stories of people who were hurt and scared. (One guy is partially deaf for the rest of his life.*!!!*)
I think it's important to talk about these things--we live our lives assuming things will be the way they're supposed to be, but we know deep in our hearts that something awful could happen in a split second. We try to gird ourselves with weapons and attitude, and sometimes they pull us through, but we know it may not be enough. (Case in point: A roommate's brother, a local Tai Kwon-do champion, was brutally murdered one night when he went to help two stranded motorists who turned out to be carjackers high on crack. Andy didn't even have time to land one punch, and he was one of the fastest fighters my roommate had ever seen.
And it happened because he didn't expect it to happen.) I've come to the conclusion that we can talk all we like, but often it comes down to opportunity and just dumb luck whether we live or die...just like everything else, really.

*Okay, got my Goth credentials out of the way now, time for something happier*

Tonight I'm going to see my friend Karen perform a new piece at Bryant-Lake: "My sister Terri's a BITCH!!" (the sister will be in the audience shouting rebuttals, it should be hilarious.)
There will be...slides!! and you can buy "My sister Terri's a BITCH!" oven mitts! (Guess who helped with the mitts?: Petite moi:) It's to help a local filmmaker get enough money to finish her latest film. (Ah, art...how DO we get the bills paid? Well now you know. Well, sort of paid:)
(Karen is my Performance Arts mentor--I still have to go to Patricks Cabaret and try a new piece: "The Workplace and Animal noises." I should be doing that later this month at another venue, too.
Yaaay!)

Ms Fledermaus, buggin' the public for money:)

I've only been beaten up once in my life, and never threatened with a weapon. I guess I should thank my lucky stars and knock on wood and sprinkle salt in a circle around me and toss a little over my shoulder.

I can never in my wildest dreams hope to be as Goth as you, but I'm wearing all black today. Yes, all black....e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. *grin* Woo!

Woo woo!!!
