What a day....it's snowing like crazy, I'm swamped with work, and I'm trying to recall the rest of a poem whose author I can't attribute...I can look it up at home, but my brain is stubborn...stubborn, stubborn brain...

Ooh, this sounds like a job for Reference Librarian Extraordinaire! What are the words that you *do* know?

This is a tough one...it's in James O'Barr's "the Crow" in the first compilation, but I don't know who origianlly wrote it--it might even be by O'Barr. Here goes:

It's a Raymond Chandler Evening
on a (something wintry?) day,
and I'm standing in my pocket,
and I'm slowly turning gray.

And (something I don't remember)
But I couldn't tell you why;
and all the leaves are falling
in a spiral from the sky;

There's a body on the landing
and (something something) why,
and I'd like to reassure you,
but I'm not that kind of guy;

It's a Raymond Chandler evening,
and the streets are (dark?) and wet,
and (something something something
because it hasn't happened yet.....

that's it, pretty much...I'm having trouble filling in the blanks. I'm suprised I remember that much; I didn't set out to memorize it ever. It just kind of stuck...

How's this?

Raymond Chandler Evening

It's a Raymond Chandler Evening
At the end of someone's day
And I'm standing in my pocket
And I'm slowly turning grey

I remember what I told you 5
But I can't remember why
And the yellow leaves are falling
In a spiral from the sky

There's a body on the railings
That I can't identify 10
And I'd like to reassure you but
I'm not that kind of guy

It's a Raymond Chandler Evening
And the pavements are all wet
And I'm lurking in the shadows 15
'Cause it hasn't happened yet

Apparently, Robyn Hitchcock first wrote the words for the song entitled "Raymond Chandler Evening."
