Hypothetical Hammerfall...

Over lunch I'd been re-reading Lucifer's Hammer
by Larry Niven. (It's about what would happen if the Earth got a massive comet strike.) I'd been reading about Hollywood and most of California dissapearing under a massive Tsunami. (Bye, Serendipity!!) London drowning, (there goes J and Richard!!) the East Coast disappearing under waves and rain, (Elllyyyy!!!) Glaciers coming down from the north, (Well, there goes Daruba and Ilona and JohnBoze and Me and Aphonia and Ana and Cyn and Kev!!)
Well maybe Glauko might survive, down in South America. But the rest of us would be toast.

Unless...

And here's my hypothetical bit: Suppose a bunch of us survived, for whatever reasons. Suppose we managed to get together. (Yes, this is *Very* hypothetical.* What skills would you have to keep a small community of people alive? You'd need doctors and sentries and farmers and possibly someone who knew about generators and electrical systems and building skills...

I tell ya: Besides what camping, canning, and herbalism skills I have, I don't know if I'd be particularly useful:) (Ummm, I can draw purty stuff, and I can cook?) Okay, mabe the herbs would help, especially since we wouldn't be making meds for a long time. Oh, and breeder stock. (*shudder*)

I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help. What special skills do I have? I can file at work, but I don't at home. I'm a terrible housekeeper *coughing out dustballs from my basement* and...ugh...I can't protect us from spiders and other creepy-crawlies. I feel itchy all over after running into so many of them while cleaning today. *shudder*

So, ok, we're living by the skin of our teeth so we don't need filing and housekeeping anyway. You're already the best storyteller and artist to keep our minds off the doom and devestation around us.

I'd hate to have to kill myself just to keep from being a burden to the rest of the group. Can you help me think of something I'm good at? *whimper* I don't wanna die.....!! ;)

a Xena Impersonator/decoy!! We could dress you like Xena, put you out front, and you can scare the bad guys who try to take our stuff while I hide behind you doing the Xena yell and brandishing Bubba the morning-star mace:) That's enough to keep you!!

Besides, you have a free labor force--your teenage kids!!!Just trot 'em out to the gardens and keep them yaking weeds, and we'll be happy. (Happy we don't have to do it ourselves, that is!;)

Building stuff is needed--we need a lodge to live in, after all...I can sculpt, so I can figure out some cementy stuff if I have to. I know what to give people to break infections and I can heimlich and first-aid people. (But birthing babies? I don't know 'bout birthin'babies...S'pose I could learn reeeealy fast.)

Oh, and I can make a pretty good leg-trap with rope. Caught my brother in one as a kid..*grin*

Ms Eff, roasting potatoes and garlic in the fire and making soup for a dozen....I always get stuck cooking:)

Did I just see Ser shoot past on a surfboard on the biggest wave I've ever seen? And she's WAVING at us and grinning!!!! And there's a little kid hanging off the back and yelling "Wooohoo!"

Well, at least she won't hear the accordion over the roar of the water...Smooth sailing, Ser!!
